Rwanda is a landlocked republic located in East Africa. Known for its breath-taking scenery, the country is often referred to as "land of a thousand hills". Rwanda is considered a low-income country.
After many years of contact, we started supporting the Gikonko Hospital in the south of Rwanda in 2019. The hospital is not only serving a population of approximately 23,000 in the region, but patients all over Rwanda who suffers of hydrocephalus. The hospital is part of the national health care system, but many of people cannot afford health insurance or only parts of the costs are covered. Therefore, they are dependent on free health care in the hospital, backed by donations.
We support selected initiatives of the Gikonko Hospital to ensure the sustainable functioning of the hospital. For example, we financed rechargeable batteries for a trephine and are now supporting with food because of the severe impact of the Covid situation.
